Data Network of the Network Operations Center

The Network Operations Center is responsible for:

  • The planning, development, upgrading and management of the unified voice and data network.

  • Supporting users on network services issues.

  • Providing Internet and Web services.

  • Provision of an e-mail service.

  • The provision of a Web Master service (for the installation and maintenance of the University’s web pages).

  • Provision of a proxy service (for the rapid retrieval of web pages with a large number of readers).

  • Provision of videoconferencing services.

  • The provision of a remote access service (Dialup).

  • Provision of a VPN service.

The data network covers all the buildings of the University and follows a modern structured cabling architecture (use of UTP Cat5 cables). The switch of the main building, Gigabit Ethernet technology, is the backbone network and the local switches of the subnets forming the access network are connected to its ports. Users are offered high-speed access (up to 1 Gbps).

The buildings at 80 Karooli and Demetriou Street, 40 Karooli and Demetriou Street and the Research Centre are interconnected at 2 Mbps via leased lines from OTE. The buildings on Androutsou and Karoli and 40 Demetriou Streets are connected to the building on 80 Karoli and Demetriou Street by a 100Mbps wireless connection system (Laser technology).

The University of Piraeus is continuously investing in upgrading its network infrastructure, using cutting-edge technologies and developing telematics applications for teaching and research purposes.
